HASS Week Cartoon Competition

To celebrate HASS Week 2021, and promote the study of Economics and Business, the Economics Teachers’ Association of Western Australia is running an Economics-themed political cartoon competition. The cartoons can be based on one of three themes relating to the current economic climate:

Any school teaching the Western Australian Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum, or the ATAR Economics Course, is invited to submit a total of up to three student-created entries, which can be based on any of the themes listed above. Entries may be drawn by hand, created using software or by some combination of these methods.

In the case where the winning entry has been created by a group of students, the $300 will be shared on an equal basis between the group members.

The teacher coordinating this competition at each school is required to submit the entries as attachments to a single email to The subject of the email should be ETAWA cartoon competition <insert school name>.

Entries must be received by 4 pm Thursday, 1st April 2021.


Each entry needs to meet the following criteria:

  • be accompanied by a completed entry form – note that students may work individually or in groups of up to 3
  • be accompanied by a completed parent consent form for each student in the group
  • be no more than 16cm x 12 cm in size (either portrait or landscape).

There is a $300 prize for the best entry in each theme. The judges’ decision will be based on:

  • demonstrated understanding of Economics concepts
  • effective commentary or critique relating to a current economic issue
  • effective communication through use of one or more illustrations, with or without text
  • year level of the student(s) who created the cartoon
  • originality.
